Upper Mustang is called 'Beyond the Himalaya' or 'Living Walled-City of Nepal' was built in 1380 AD by the first King of Lo, Ame Pal. The walled city still stands as a testimony to Lo-Manthang's prosperity and rich cultural heritage. Upper Mustang is a restricted trekking area in Nepal. It was opened to foreigners in 1992. It is located in the northwestern area of Nepal and is a part of the Tibetan plateau. This area has long been inhabited by the Tibetan Buddhists and no where else in Nepal can such a rich and untouched culture be found. The village is made up of a cluster of camps such as: Samba Camp, Dhabi Camp, Main Head Camp and Kesang Camp. The main attraction of Mustang is The Royal Palace of the former King which is only a day's walk from the Tibetan border. Trekking in Mustang is truly one of the rarest and most rewarding experiences to be had in Nepal. |
